The Naval Port of Ancient Sparta

Ancient Akraia  

According to Pausanias the foundation of Akraia dates back to the prehistoric period. It was one of the most notable coastal cities in Laconia. It was named after its settler Akrias who was from Sparta. Its location, in Kokkinia, has been identified from the scattered fragments of clay pots and from the unsigned statue of Nikoklis.

Krokeean Stone

The stone from Krokkee is a dark green a stone from lava, with yellow spots like a mosaic. This is a rear kind of compact stone which can be found only in the area of Psifi in Krokee. It was used in ancient times to create pots and stamps as well as decorating buildings, baths and tombs although it couldn’t be treated easily.

Dioskouroi, Kastoras and Polydeykis, were regarded the protectors of ancient Krokees and sons of Zeus. A bust of Dioskouroi carved on a marble stone was discovered during recent excavations and today decorates the fountain of the Krokees main square. It dates back to 81 - 96 AC.
